Biography
Near the end of the 1970’s Andre Cervera, born in 1962, started to follow fine arts through Sete and then to Marseilles. Since his paintings were nourished by a daily life, which he names “extraordinary”, he took what was ordinary to us and with his imagination truly made it extraordinary to everybody. His work in China, through collaboration with Hong Merchant has inspired the everyday normalcy of China and exhibited these trends onto a canvass in ways that nobody has ever before. The way Cervera takes ancient Chinese philosophies and fuses them together with modern day Shanghai life is uncanny. You will see Chinese people playing mahjong in a modern day Shanghai street ally but in the same image the locals look like they came from a dynasty in China long ago. This new experience of adapting his art to his surroundings is not foreign to Cervera, his paintings from South America and Africa have a similar feel and the his style definitely translates cross-culturally, but the eastern influenced Chinese perspective is what sets these paintings across from any other, illuminating your senses for a clash of modern Chinese life and old dynastic principals, all in one picture. His paintings, such as the “notebooks of voyage,” tell the people, society, love, death - the human aspect always. He likes to focus on the people of the society and their natural surroundings. By using the people as the epicenter of his paintings he is able to show the lifestyle, the man made surroundings and the natural ones.
"While arriving in Shanghai, I sparked an interest with the Chinese mythology which is a foundation for this 5000 year old society. Then, I discovered the posters of the Cultural Revolution, which takes part of a contemporary history and a specific iconography. That leads me today to propose through this exposition, with my glance of Western artist, a voyage return ticket of past to the present.”
